About Savannah State University

Savannah State University is a four-year, state-supported, historically black university (HBCU) located in Savannah, which is the largest city and the county seat of Chatham County, situated in the US state of Georgia. According to the USA Census Bureau, Savannah occupies a total area of 78.1 square miles, of which 74.7 square miles is land and 3.4 square miles is water.


Savannah State University was originally founded on August 30, 1890, as a result of the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, on November 26, in the same year, Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth being created. The university awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1898, and in 1921, the fist female students were admitted as residents on the campus. The current name of the university was adopted in 1996, when the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia elevated Savannah State College, granting it the status of state university.


Here, at Savannah State University, the students can choose from 23 accredited undergraduate baccalaureate degrees and 5 graduate master’s degree programs, the university being the 1st in the state to offer the homeland security degree program, and the 2nd educational institution in the University System of Georgia, to offer wireless Internet connectivity to students throughout the campus.


The athletic teams from Savannah State are known as the Savannah State Tigers, who compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, in various sports, including baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, track and field and several other sports. Savannah State gained maximum attention, when the Tigers finished the 2004–2005 men’s basketball season with 0-28, being the first Division I team to do so, since Prairie View A&M University, in 1991–1992, the team’s final game, against Florida A & M, being covered by several sports organizations, including ESPN.


The list of notable Savannah State alumni contains resonant names such as W. W. Law - nationally-known civil rights leader and preservationist, Donnie Cochran - Retired U.S. Navy Captain who completed two tours with the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, James E. Wright - flight instructor for the World War II Tuskegee Airmen, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
